Ingersoll was a lawyer and a philosopher. His speech at the 1876 Republican convention in Cincinnati did not assure James Blaine’s presidential candidacy, but his eloquence made him famous overnight. His orations always drew a crowd, especially in his native state of New York. Having followed Maria’s trial closely, Ingersoll had done some careful research before stepping into the fray.
